What books, magazines, periodicals, websites or other materials should people read to learn more about this field?
The Amercian College of Healthcare Administration's periodical and journal. Anthony Kovner's books on career development in healthcare administration, and his books on healthcare management and case studies.

What questions would you ask of someone who wants to do this work?
What trends do you see in healthcare today and why do you want to be a manager in health administration today? Give three reasons.

In what kinds of jobs can recent college graduates have the most impact in your field?
1. Finance analysts
2. Strategic Planning
3. Operations analysts

What are the major trends and/or key issues in your field?
  1. The aging of the population will demand more from healthcare within the next 30 years.
  2. The shortage of nurses and paraprofessionals impacts the quality and provision of healthcare.
  3. Medicaid and Medicare cuts impact funding and resource allocation. Managed care, as a money losing mechanism for providers, alters income levels and care maangement.
  4. Governmental and state managment (or lack thereof) of the key issues in healthcare impact the direction in which home health agencies, hospitals, SNFs, etc., are moving.
  5. There is a lack of planning in healthcare to address the awesome needs of the popultion. The industry is more reactive than proactive.


What forms of support and/or advice have you found most valuable (mentoring, trainings, professional development, attending conferences, etc.)?
Mentoring is invaluable. Attending conferences is a great way to network and keep up with fresh, new thoughts.

What is a common or tough interview question a candidate in your field should be prepared to answer?
What are three trends in healthcare and how should the industry be prepared to address them?
What other advice would you give people who want to do this work?
  1. You have to want to work long hours.
  2. You need to be a 'generalist' no matter what your job or knowledge base allows.
  3. Get a masters degree earlier rather than later.
  4. Network like the dickens!
