Advice
What books, magazines, periodicals, websites or other materials should people read to learn more about this field?
KidsPeace has its own national publication—Healing Magazine—for more info on our organization.

What questions would you ask of someone who wants to do this work?
Are you satisfied? Do you feel you have the opportunity to make a difference? Would you choose the same path again if you could start over? What are the opportunities for advancement?

In what kinds of jobs can recent college graduates have the most impact in your field?
Direct care positions with children & adolescents, although these are typically low-paying jobs. I would recommend a year or so of 'field work' so that graduates understand the field first-hand, and then graduate school for better paying, more influential positions.

What are the major trends and/or key issues in your field?
Managed care
Research in mental health treatment

What forms of support and/or advice have you found most valuable (mentoring, trainings, professional development, attending conferences, etc.)?
Trainings, conferences, self-study & mentoring

What is a common or tough interview question a candidate in your field should be prepared to answer?
Interviewers typically present case studies and 'how would you handle this?' situations, which requires that graduates be able to put themselves in the shoes of a professional and give a well-thought-out response.
What other advice would you give people who want to do this work?
Search your soul and have realistic expectations. Have patience. Nonprofit work can be very rewarding, but very challenging. Typically, you will not earn the incomes that your friends are making and while this may seem 'okay' to you as a recent graduate, as you get older, this becomes more of an issue. Talk with people in the field for first-hand accounts. Again, the desire to 'make a difference' is noble, but bureaucratic issues make this a tough goal to accomplish, so you need a realistic picture of the challenges you will face, in order to prevent burnout.
