Advice
What books, magazines, periodicals, websites or other materials should people read to learn more about this field?
Harvard Business Review, Flawless Consulting by Peter Block, Organizatonal Capability by David Ulrich and Dale Lake, Creating Public Value by Mark Moore, Managing a Nonprofit Organization, Working with Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Coleman, books by Edgar Schein, and books by Peter Senge. And on the web: www.managementhelp.org, www.boardsource.org, and www.echoinggreenfoundation.org

What questions would you ask of someone who wants to do this work?
How do you feel about failing or failure? How do you feel about saying no or giving bad news? Are you able to listen without interrupting or asking probing questions? Do you need to experience immediate results or change? What's your definition of capacity building? Have you ever been the recipient of TA or worked in an organization that was?

In what kinds of jobs can recent college graduates have the most impact in your field?
College graduates usually are hired as coordinators, or as assistants who work with directors, helping with the development of publications, training, and research.

What are the major trends and/or key issues in your field?
There is a question as to whether TA funding should go directly to organizations who then contract with a TA provider, rather than the funds going to the provider who then seeks clients. What is "capacity building" is another question.

What forms of support and/or advice have you found most valuable (mentoring, trainings, professional development, attending conferences, etc.)?
My education at Wagner was especially critical: the use of teams throughout the curriculum; the Capstone Project, which is a year-long consulting project with a nonprofit or government agency; and courses like Reflective Practice, Managing Public Service Organizations, Shadowing Opportunities, APPAM Conference, and Managing Service Delivery. I have taken training and professional development courses since graduating.

What is a common or tough interview question a candidate in your field should be prepared to answer?
What are your personal challenges with TA or capacity building? Is there a theory or approach you perfer?

What other advice would you give people who want to do this work?
Depending on where funding goes, we could be gone tomorrow. There is no cure-all. Things take time, and they may be saying yes and doing no.
