Idealist is a nonprofit organization that connects people and organizations around the world. We were founded in 1995 and our staff of 40 is based in New York and in Portland, Oregon.0 replies
On March 11 Idealist launched a new network to help people everywhere connect and take action on any issue that concerns them, locally or globally, online and in person. The heart of this movement consists of people all over the world—called Connectors—who want to inspire and ignite action and collaboration in their communities.0 replies
Yes. Working with others, in a spirit of generosity and mutual respect, we want to help build a world where all people can lead free and dignified lives.
As with Idealist.org, our goal here is to connect more people to more organizations. By listing your organization on Idealist, and posting your opportunities and events, we hope you will connect with more people who want to support your work or benefit from your expertise.
Billions of people are already online, and billions more have mobile phones. But wherever internet access is truly nonexistent, we’ll have to use other means to connect and keep in touch, from transistor radios to bulletin boards on village trees. Wherever there’s a will, we’ll find a way.
We’ll be translating these pages as quickly as we can, but in the meantime you can start a Team and then interact with other people in your local language.
As of now, all of this work is funded by the small fee that organizations in the United States pay for posting jobs and internships on Idealist (everything else on Idealist is free.) That’s enough funding to get started, but we’ll need more soon. If you’d like to make a donation, you can do so here. Thank you!
Connectors are the backbone of this movement. They are the glue that holds this network together. Connectors share a passion for promoting action and collaboration and for finding and sharing good ideas. While playing this role, Connectors are neutral and impartial. They don’t take sides on specific issues or promote their own personal agenda.
Connectors focus on three big goals: making it easier for everyone in their community to move from intention to action; connecting people, organizations, and resources; and finding and spreading good ideas.
This is entirely up to each person. You could take a few minutes to help one person take one good step forward, or you could devote as much time as you like to this work. The only thing that matters is your passion for connecting people, ideas, and resources.
We’ll provide tools and resources, and we’ll always be here for you. Most importantly, we will connect you to other Connectors in your area so that you can support one another. The one thing we can’t provide is money.
Tools and Tactics are replicable templates that Connectors can use to multiply and amplify action and collaboration in their communities.
On March 24 we’ll be sharing the initial menu of Tools and Tactics. As soon as those templates are up, you’ll be able to submit additional ones.
An Action Group is a support group for action, started and facilitated by one or more Connectors. Groups are open to anyone who wants to take action on any issue, or help other people do so. Groups can serve neighborhoods, schools, universities, workplaces, houses of worship, or any other community.
You can start an Action Group for your neighborhood, workplace, school, university, or house of worship. Or you can choose to focus on an issue you care about, such as education, homelessness, or the environment.
In either case, your aim as a Connector is to invite people to share their intentions and ideas, and to create an environment that will lead to action and collaboration.
