GO GREEN: FOOD FOR THE SOUL

Community, Food and Fun! The ICC invites you to an educational workshop on food consciousness on Sunday May 5, 2013 from 1pm-4pm:

Event Details:

1:00pm-1:45pm: "How to Create and Organic Vegetable Garden" – Merikay Smith, Master Gardener

2:00pm-3:00pm: "Container Gardening" Activity – supervised by Emmalee June of DC Green Muslims. Families and students will plant organic lettuce seeds in small containers with fresh compost and also learn how to take care of them. Containers can be placed on your windowsill and maintained with minimum effort. One container per family. *

Drinks and light refreshments will be served simultaneously at this time

3:00pm-4:00pm: Brief Presentations with Interactive Q/A sessions (children may participate in an arts and crafts activity in our kids' area during this time)

  • Beyond Halal: With Every Fork a Choice – Devon Payne-Surges DrPH is an environmental health scientist with the US Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Creating Community through Gardens – Alex Stavitsky-Zeinuddin is founder of GreenGaithersburg.com and the Kentlands Community Foundation's GO GREEN group.
  • How Vegetables Provide Food for the Soul – Jeremy John is Program Director of the Quixote Center's Food and Faith Network.
  • Students can receive SSL hours for entire program but they must attend container gardening activity.

Farmer Larry Ledgard from Good Life Farm in Darnestown MD will offer fresh organic produce at the workshop!

Access: The ICC is handicap accessible. The elevator is located on the front side of the building.

Transport: There will be one pick up at Shady Grove metro station at 12:30pm. PLEASE RSVP IN ADVANCE.
