Human Rights and Indigenous Legal Traditions

Posted by: Canadian School of Peacebuilding

Description

Indigenous people have many intellectual, legal and political resources. In this course, students will explore those resources and draw them out as gifts for reasoning through today's complex struggles regarding resources and relationships.

This course will draw on indigenous stories to explore sources of Indigenous law and what its functions are, is legitimacy and authority, and how law changes over time. The course will include rigorous critical thinking about law that can support the building of non-colonial relationships among Indigenous peoples and between Indigenous peoples and Canada.

Val Napoleon is a law professor at the University of Victoria and a member of the Saulteau First Nation in British Columbia (Treaty 8).
