About Us

The City of Oakland’s Adopt a Spot program has been improving Oakland’s environment and communities since 1992. A program of the Oakland Public Works Agency Environmental Services Division, Adopt a Spot supports sustainability throughout Oakland’s vibrant and diverse neighborhoods through city-wide community and environmental stewardship. Individual volunteers, neighborhood groups, civic organizations, and businesses clean, green, and beautify almost 400 “adopted” Oakland locationsthrough Adopt a Spot. These public “spots” are properties owned by the City of Oakland and include right of ways, city infrastructure (such as signs, storm drains, litter containers, utility boxes and poles, street tree wells, and trees), parks, libraries, creeks, and shorelines. Adopt a Spot provides volunteer education and outreach, tool loans, trash and debris collection, technical assistance and project permitting.
