The Service Learning Institute (SLI) at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) is recognized as one of the leading service learning programs in the nation. CSUMB is the only public university in California (and one of only a handful nationally) that has made service learning a graduation requirement for all academic programs. Each year, nearly 50% of the CSUMB students are enrolled in service learning courses, exploring issues of service, social justice and civic engagement with community organizations throughout the region. The SLI's work in service learning is deeply grounded in issues of social justice and diversity, having pioneered a "critical civic literacy" approach to service and civic engagement in higher education.
