Description

Purpose

This internship provides a great opportunity to learn about disability issues around the world. This will involve exposure to Handicap International's efforts on institutional funding, external relations, advocacy, operations and collaborations with various types of organizations around Washington, DC. This position will support Handicap International's Institutional Funding team in general grants administration, identifying and applying for funding opportunities, prospecting donors, project design and research on key thematic areas. This position will require attending meetings with partner organizations and events on key international issues in Washington, DC.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this internship, the student will be able to:

  1. Analyze and research institutional donor trends and develop funding strategies for country programs
  2. Describe various funding agencies within the US government
  3. Assist in preparation of information and documents for project proposals
  4. Work effectively in a fast pace office environment
  5. Discuss about a wide variety of disability issues around the world
  6. Understand the process of obtaining funding and supporting the management of grants

Potential Activity Areas

  1. Attending and taking notes at Interaction and other NGO network meetings particularly on new themes and assist in managing InterAction working groups and listservs
  2. Assisting in the preparation of information and documents for project proposals
    1. Answering questions related to donor strategy and trends to inform donor strategies, e.g.:
      1. Global Health
      2. Democracy and Governance
      3. Economic development
      4. Disability Issues
    2. Research new potential Institutional Funding sources
    3. Attend internal and external meetings as well as networking events
    4. Assist in country program reviews and funding strategies
    5. Other tasks assigned by Department of Institutional Funding
    6. Assist in providing logistical support to Handicap International's delegation to the UN Conference of states parties

Qualifications

- Currently enrolled in a master's program or bachelors program in political science, international development or related field

- Demonstrated ability to conduct effective and timely research

- Competency in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook

- Excellent interpersonal skills, highly organized, good attention to detail, independent worker, self-motivated and able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously;

- Must be available to work for at least 20 hours a week, for at least 12 weeks

- Must be eligible to work in the United States

- Excellent written English

- Experience with disability related issues preferred
