VOLUNTEER POSITION:

GED Classroom Tutor

ORGANIZATION:

HealthRIGHT 360 and the Walden House Resource Center

COMMITMENT:

3 hours or more per week during open class hours for 3 to 4 months. The classroom is open from 9am to 12:00pm Monday through Friday (except Tuesdays). We have a need for volunteers for every day that we're open!

WHO WE ARE:

The mission of the Walden House Resource Center is to empower our clients to attain self-sufficiency, to continue recovery and to realize their ultimate potential by building skills, providing support, and role modeling professional behavior. We are a program of HealthRIGHT360, the result of Walden House and Haight Ashbury Free Clinic's merger.

THE GED CLASSROOM:

Our classroom is focused on preparing adult students for the GED, often beginning with remedial skills, and is open to all Walden House clients who have not earned a high school diploma. We have a credentialed teacher who organizes instruction for approximately 15 students on any given day.

OUR STUDENTS:

Our students are all ages and ethnicities, but most have challenges besides addiction such as disadvantaged backgrounds, criminal histories, and physical or mental disabilities. Every student is on an individualized plan of study that they have created with our credentialed teacher.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

This position would be well-suited to someone who is interested in helping our clients progress in their studies and their recovery. It is a deeply rewarding and fun opportunity. This is an unpaid opportunity. Your duties will include:

* Working with students one-on-one on their GED or high school diploma coursework

* Provide instruction on basic math and other subjects

SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS, and TRAITS THAT THIS POSITION REQUIRES:

* Excellent communication, interpersonal and listening skills

* Ability to maintain professional boundaries

* Interest in working with diverse, disadvantaged populations including low literacy, learning disabilities, physical disabilities and impaired cognitive functioning

* Willingness to maintain client confidentiality

* A background or interest in education is a plus but not required

*Knowledgeable in High School Match and interest in helping students with math is a BIG plus!

*Open to taking direction

TRAINING AND SUPERVISION:

You will be given a volunteer orientation and have the opportunity to observe our classroom environment to determine if it's a good match for your interests. In the classroom, you will work closely with our GED teacher who will be available to address any questions or concerns that arise.
