Overview

The Corning Museum of Glass, the international leader in the pursuit and dissemination of knowledge about the art, history, science, and technology of glass and glassmaking, is excited to offer a curatorial internship to a student or recent graduate to assist with the organization and research for an exhibition on Pyrex which will be displayed at the Rakow Research Library in 2015. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with staff in the Curatorial Department and at the Rakow Research Library.

The preferred candidate will have a strong interest in 20th century decorative arts, design, and material culture. The ideal candidate will have an interest in working in a museum, researching, writing, cataloging, and organizing. Strong consideration will be given to candidates experienced with Mimsy and/ or Voyager databases. The intern will be required to work well with and communicate with a variety of staff members, and may at times be asked to work independently on projects. Ability to work in a Windows environment is required.

Responsibilities

Assist the curatorial and library staff with research and preparations for the 2015 Pyrex 100th Anniversary exhibition. This includes, but is not limited to, the following duties:

  • Research Pyrex's history, material culture, social implications, and science
  • Identify references to Pyrex in popular culture
  • Write blog posts about Pyrex for the Museum's blog, Behind the Glass
  • Assist with cataloging Pyrex collections at the Museum and Library
  • Scan Pyrex advertisements and ephemera
  • Organize exhibition materials

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Interest in 20th century design, history, material culture, science, and/ or popular culture
  • Interest in museum work, including curatorial, registrarial, and/ or library science
  • Experience researching, writing, and cataloging
  • Excellent communication and time management skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to details
  • Current student or recent graduate from a college-level museum studies, library, or information science program
  • Ability to work independently; ability to take direction; willingness to ask questions
  • Ability to work in a Windows environment; proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
  • Preferred experience working with Mimsy and/or Voyager databases

This internship is available beginning in the Fall of 2013. Ability to commit to at least 20 hours/week is preferred, but we can offer some flexibility regarding terms and hours. This internship is unpaid, but we will provide you with valuable work experience in a museum setting.
