Dance for Life Intern

The AIDS Foundation of Chicago is seeking a responsible and motivated individual to intern in its Development Department under Dance for LIfe.The Dance for Life intern will start in April 2013 and assist in all levels of planning for the Dance for Life event. This intern will gain exposure to event planning and various aspects of fundraising in a nonprofit setting.

The Dance for Life Intern will directly assist the producer of Dance for Life and learn how a nonprofit organizations conducts phone solicitation, letter writing, vendor negotiations, volunteer recruitment, marketing/social media and event logistics. During her/his tenure, the intern will also have the opportunity to learn how events directly support the Dance for Life mission.

The Dance for Life intern will learn:

  • Management of event logistics, including: the development of the site plan, oversight of set-up/breakdown materials, management of manpower needs, activities, coordination, and supply delivery;
  • How to work with a volunteer committee;
  • How to analyze and work within budgets;
  • Base on evaluation and event briefing sessions, how to recommend improvements for the future as appropriate;
  • How to utilize marketing and social media tools.

Qualifications:

  • Current or recen tenrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree program with an interest and aptitude to work in the special events field and performance arts management;
  • Students majoring in special event planninhg, marketing, communications, or public relations;
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills;
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and handle numerous concurrent assignments;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications;
  • Passion for the performing arts and volunteer experience of familiarity with nonprofit organizations desired.

The internship's goals include imparting on--the-job training and experience in an expanding special events field. The Dance for Life Intern will work closely with the producer of Dance for LIfe and AFC's Development department to gain conceptual knowledge, along with the hands-on experience of completing specific tasks associated with event planning. At the end of his/her internship, the Dance for Life Intern will have working knowledge of special event planning and meeting planning tasks, processes, budgeting and marketing which s/he will be able to translate into future career opportunities.

The candidate will also gain familiarity with a variety of Chicago-area corporate and foundation funders, as well as those that specifically fund HIV/AIDS, and ahve opportunities to network with staff from other departments and the broader community.

This internship is unpaid (stipend available), however, AFC can help interns obtain college credit where available. The intern will receive necessary training and staff supervision. The ideal applicant will be available to work April through August 2013, however, there is flexibility in the start and end dates for the perfect candidate. The intern must be available Thursday, August 15th through Saturday, August 17th for the Dance for Life set-up and performance.
