Summer Internship Description – Supportive Services

TRC seeks a very versatile intern who will support staff within several TRC Supportive Service Departments – Health & Wellness, Life Skills, and Education & Employment. This is an excellent opportunity for an intern who wants to develop organizational-level skills while gaining a basic understanding of several supportive services sectors. The intern performs routine clerical work in areas such as bookkeeping, inventory control, statistics, employment, human resources, and purchasing. Work also involves compiling and tabulating data, checking documents for accuracy, transporting documents, and maintaining files. The intern works under moderate supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

The Renaissance Collaborative, Inc. (TRC), an award-winning non-profit organization, was founded by four historic Bronzeville ecumenical churches in 1992. TRC promotes self-sufficiency through an innovative and comprehensive network of supportive housing, employment, and educational services. Using an asset-based approach, the agency works in three distinct business areas: Renaissance Apartments & Fitness for Life Center, Senior Village, and Bronzeville Green.

Knowledge Requirements

  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently; Interest in learning how a non-profit organization (NPO) works.
  • Basic theory and principles of organization and management as well as recordkeeping procedures
  • Capabilities of standard computer systems, software, and hardware
  • Computer software such as word-processing, spreadsheet, database management, and desktop publishing (e.g. Word, Excel, Access)
  • Elementary statistics and techniques of data collection and fact-finding methods
  • Proper business English, punctuation, spelling, and grammatical usage

Typical Duties

  • Preparing and distributing information, taking meeting notes, establishing/tracking next steps tasks list, collecting and displaying data, developing timelines;
  • Editing and distributing correspondence; developing, coordinating, and maintaining record keeping and filing systems
  • Assisting in planning meetings and other program activities
  • Performs a variety of entry-level administrative staff duties related to areas such as administrative regulations, policies, processes, procedures, systems, methods, reports, surveys, and forms, while learning the fundamental mission, structure, and operations associated with the assigned administrative division.
  • Applies basic statistical and management analysis techniques or, with detailed instructions, advanced statistical and management techniques in analyzing data.
  • Assists in writing instructions, procedures, guides, and manuals to describe and improve administrative, technological, and operational methods and systems.
  • Prepares reports, presentations, operational documents, and correspondence containing descriptive, analytical, and evaluative content related to business, technological, and operational activities subject to review and editing by higher-level staff members.
  • May perform a wide variety of paraprofessional, technical, and clerical tasks during peak workload periods or in the absence of assigned staff.
  • Research prospects, compile data, reorganize development prospects database, pull past grants and enter funder data into database.
  • Must be flexible, open-minded, good at working with teams, willing to learn about and be respectful of people who are homeless.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
