Internship

Urban Planning/Organizer Intern

Posted on: January 7, 2013

Posted by: Boston Cyclists Union

Description

The velorution is taking Boston by storm. Every Urban Planning intern is assigned a particular Union campaign they can help out on, whether it be a long-term policy effort, a particular street we'd like to see reconstructed in a more bike-friendly way, or outreach to a particular neighborhood. The complexity of the project and level of leadership is dependent on the intern's abilities and time availability. Skills learned include building coalitions, volunteer raising, using databases to increase volunteer engagement, engaging with planners, city officials, and electeds, and analyzing plans for possible improvements. Research is also a big part of the job. As with all internships at the Union—the responsibility for other office and event work is shared.

Qualifications for all interns:
**

  • Commitment to the Union's mission of promoting the bicycle.
  • Happy to work in a small tight-knit team for a rapidly growing organization.
  • Organized and self motivated.
  • Ability to solve problems and work without direct supervision when necessary
  • Residence within the greater Boston area.
  • Must be able to spend at least one full day (10am-6pm) in the office each week.

Bonus Points for:
**

  • Fluency in Brazilian Portuguese, Cantonese, Cape Verdean Crioulo, Haitian Kreyól, Mandarin, Spanish, or Vietnamese.
  • Sales, customer service, or fundraising experience.
  • Bike mechanic skills.
  • Tech savvy of all kinds.
  • City planning or bike advocacy background.
  • Experience or expertise in GIS
  • Familiarity with biking.
