The Position

The String Teaching Fellowship will be responsible for assisting daily music instruction at Bridge Boston Charter School's El Sistema-inspired enrichment program. He or she will ensure the highest quality music experience for elementary students, leading and assisting in both general and instrumental music classes with lead teacher. He or she will support Bridge Boston Charter School's commitment to create a challenging, joyful, and inclusive community that values close partnerships with families to help students reach their individual potentials.

Duties will include:

  • Collaborate with lead teacher to create a shared curriculum, pedagogy, and culture inspired by the ideals of El Sistema
  • Develop creative and challenging lessons plans in advance of daily classes
  • Learn, understand, and represent the program's philosophies for uplifting youth, families, and communities through the pursuit of musical excellence
  • Perform/assist in concerts during the school year

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent experience required; post-graduate degree or equivalent experience a plus
  • Experience teaching beginning strings in group and private settings
  • Strong knowledge of standard music pedagogy; certification preferred
  • Excellent musicianship and artistry as an educator/performer
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and ability to work on a team
  • Ability to adapt, be flexible, and have a sense of humor
  • Passion for music and the arts as a vehicle for positive social change

Compensation

This is a paid fellowship. Compensation is dependent on hours available and duties assigned, which may include:

  • Monthly stipend
  • Free housing and housing expenses
  • Food allowance and meals
  • Health insurance
  • Americorps Educational Award of approximately $4500 (pending funding)
  • Opportunity to explore and support the development the El Sistema movement in Boston, collaborating with similar programs and institutions
  • Joy

Hours: Monday - Friday, 3-5pm plus additional hours during school day based on applicant's availability

Start Date: Fall 2013
