Internship description

Grassroots Fundraising Intern

Sustainer Campaign Drive Coordinator

Background

We are looking for interns who want to make a difference in the housing crisis by building up a growing grassroots fundraising program, and who have a passion for social change work with low-income communities of color. You will receive basic training in grassroots fundraising to start, and ongoing opportunities for further training and political education. We know that the future success of our organization will depend on consistent, reliable support from our constituency and those who believe in the mission of CJJC.

The Grassroots Fundraising Intern will be providing support for CJJC's annual Sustainer Drive Campaign. The goal of the Sustainer Drive Campaign is to outreach to both members and non-members and ask them to give monthly donations. Giving monthly is a more secure and convenient way to donate and it allows us to build sustained financial support through individuals who care about CJJC's work. We can both cultivate new donors and also ask one-time donors to give on a regular, monthly basis. The goal is to have 100 sustainers by the end of the campaign. The Sustainer Drive Campaign will take place between June and August 2013.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate outreach to potential sustainers through mailings and phone-banking
  • Track and acknowledge donor payments
  • Coordinate house parties and small events where we sign up people to be sustainers

Other internship activities may include:

  • Logistical support for organizational events
  • Creating materials for fundraising activities and other organizational needs
  • Assisting staff in using social media
  • Participating in organizational activities (rallies, membership meetings) as schedule permits

Benefits to interns:

  • Exposure to grassroots organizing around tenant and immigrant rights
  • Job experience while making a difference in the community
  • Hands-on experience with grassroots fundraising systems
  • Political education
  • Participate in vibrant, multi-racial, multi-generational grassroots community organization

Time commitment:

  • 10-20 hours a week, June-September 2013

Working hours (any time within these work hours)

M-F, 9am-5pm

Location: CJJC's West Oakland Office, 3268 San Pablo Avenue, Oakland, CA

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to racial and economic justice
  • Spanish language skills a plus
  • Familiarity with Google Calendar and Mac computers a plus
  • Ability to work well and respectfully with communities of color, LGBTQ people, and low-income families

We believe everyone has a right to safe, dignified and affordable housing and that working class communities are a vital part of our cities. We believe that strengthening tenant rights is a critical way to prevent the displacement of working class low-income families, along with grassroots organizing for social change. We are a multi-racial organization bringing together Black and Latino immigrant communities to fight for daily bread-and-butter survival struggles (like paying rent or getting jobs) with a transformational vision for a progressive future.

Help support the fight for working class families by becoming a Grassroots Fundraising Intern with CJJC in Oakland!
