About Fresh Prep
Fresh Prep (www.myfreshprep.org) is an innovative student-centered curriculum that uses Hip-Hop music to help students review the key content and skills tested by New York State Regents Exams. Leveraging the appeal and mnemonic power of music, Fresh Prep's standards-aligned instruction helps students build the confidence, critical-thinking, and writing skills they need to pass the test. Fresh Prep offers previously failing high school student s 50-60 hours of direct instruction in preparation for the New York State Regents Exam in Global History, US History, English, or Math.

About the Role
The Fresh Prep Apprentice is a college student providing coordinating support to Fresh Prep by working alongside staff, teaching artists, classroom teachers and students.

The Fresh Prep Apprentice:

  • Supports the coordination and implementation of Fresh Prep Core classes inside New York City Public High Schools.
  • Participates in weekly Fresh Prep team meetings, monthly program evaluation meetings, and regular staff trainings.
  • Conducts research to support the development of educational materials and digital resources for teachers and students.
  • Conducts demographic research on partner schools and communities.
  • Assists in the collection of data on student demographics and educational outcomes.
  • Creates Power Point presentations that follow Fresh Prep curriculum maps.
  • Receives training on Culturally Responsive Pedagogy and differentiated instruction to nurture the academic growth and success of all students.
  • Assists in the coordination of of professional development workshops for teachers on culturally responsive methodology and the successful implementation of Fresh Prepcurricula.

Key Qualifications
The Fresh Prep Apprentice possesses, at minimum, a high school diploma and is currently enrolled in an accredited university. Applicants pursuing teaching credentials and certification are highly preferred.

Eligible candidates for this position must have:

  • An passionate interest in building a career as a certified classroom teacher or professional teaching artist.
  • An interest in at least one Regents Exam subject area (US History, Global History, English, and/or Math).
  • An awareness of, and an appreciation for, the artistic, cultural and historical impact of Hip-Hop.
  • The ability and willingness to commit to a 6-8 week work schedule of at least 5 hours per week, between the hours of 8: 00 am to 5:00 pm.

Additionally, the Fresh Prep Apprentice should:

  • Be a detail-oriented person, with strong organizational skills.
  • Have some teaching experience.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of important social issues and be passionate about working to help close the opportunity gap for young people of color.
