Internship description

SCAN of Northern Virginia promotes the well-being of children, improves parent-child relations and prevents child abuse and neglect by: educating the community about child abuse/neglect and the importance of positive parenting; providing parent education; and advocating for children in the community, the legislature and the courts. Today, SCAN pursues its mission through three programs: a Public Education Program; a Parent Education Program; and the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program.

This position requires a self-motivated, creative individual with the ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal); an interest in planning special events and learning about non-profit management; ability to multi task and manage deadlines; and be a part of the SCAN team. The intern will report to SCAN's Development Director.

Responsibilities may include:

1. Provide administrative support for SCAN:

  • Assist with donation appeal mailing & thank you letters
  • Help execute FY13 Development Plan

2. Assist with Public Education Program

  • Help implement the Pinwheel Partner outreach for April's Child Abuse Prevention Month campaign
  • Assist in organizing the Allies in Prevention Luncheon
  • Help implement social media goals with the Council of Young Professionals
  • Help edit and draft content for the website, blog or fact sheets, as needed

3. Assist with logistics and implementation for special events

  • Provide support and help to plan the first Croquet Day event for SCAN in May
  • Provide support and help to implement the Golf Tournament in June
  • Help implement the annual volunteer recognition party in June.

Qualifications: Applicants must have an interest in fundraising, communications, public relations and/or event planning in the nonprofit sector. Experience or course work in marketing, fundraising, communications, or special events is a plus, but not required. Basic understanding of Microsoft Office programs is necessary.

Length of commitment: The dates are flexible and the internship can run for either the Spring or Summer semester or both.

Weekly hours: Minimum of 10-15 hours each week based on a Monday-Friday 9a – 5p schedule with the possibility of some nights and weekend hours as needed. The exact hours and schedule is flexible.

Stipend: This is an unpaid internship.

Worksite: The intern will work at our offices located at 1705 Fern Street, Alexandria, VA.
