NAMI's policy team is looking for computer savvy, inquisitive and dedicated interns to assist with a variety of projects key to the success of our organization.
What's in it for you? Interns will have the opportunity to work on a multi-disciplinary team of national mental health policy experts; be exposed to a variety of mental health policy issues and have a key role in a project that will make a difference for NAMI's members.
Who would you be working with? NAMI is the largest grassroots organization focused on improving the lives of millions of Americans affected by mental illness. These internship positions are with NAMI's policy team, which advocates at the federal and state levels on issues of importance to people living with mental illness and their families across the lifespan. The team works on children's issues, criminalization of mental illness, veterans issues, federal advocacy and provides policy and advocacy support to NAMI State Organizations and NAMI Affiliates nationwide.
Internships are unpaid. Interns will be expected to commit to 10 weeks, at least 10-20 hours/week. Actual days and times can be negotiated between intern and supervisor.

Youth, Young Adults and Mental Health. This intern will assist with StrengthofUs.org, NAMI's online resource center and social networking website for young adults, and NAMI on Campus,NAMI's college club program for college students. The intern will be responsible for helping to create new resources and materials for NAMI on Campus and creating innovative ideas for students leading clubs. The intern will also work on promoting StrengthofUs.org and posting content on the site. This exciting internship offers the opportunity to learn about the lived experience of youth and young adults and to truly make a difference in their lives by providing resources, support, hope and strength. The ideal candidate will have extensive social networking knowledge, strong writing skills, creative talents and a passion for mental health.
Mental Illness and the Criminal Justice System. This intern will be responsible for assisting with NAMI's efforts at criminal justice system reform, particularly in the areas of prison reentry and law enforcement interaction with people with mental illness. This position will require significant writing and research skills, and initiative in structuring work. The intern should be comfortable conducting phone interview s and writing for a lay audience.
Resiliency Project Program Intern. Under the direction of the Manager for Military and Veterans Policy and Support, this intern will be responsible for assisting with the development of a new NAMI initiative aimed at empowering women veterans. The scope of work will include gathering program information from six (6) states where the program is being piloted – including California, Virginia, New Jersey, Ohio, Wisconsin, and South Carolina - for evaluation and reporting purposes. Intern will also provide technical assistance to project participants, as necessary and appropriate.
Supported Employment Initiative Intern. This intern collaborates with the national NAMI Policy Team to promote greater engagement of people with serious mental illness in the workforce. Core responsibilities will include research, web content management, developing fact sheets and creating reports, articles and social media messaging to promote supported employment.
Health Reform Outreach Campaign Intern. This intern collaborates with the national NAMI Policy Team to promote awareness of new coverage opportunities for people living with mental illness offered as a result of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Core responsibilities will include assisting Policy Team staff with various aspects of the campaign including a social media strategy, writing articles and blog posts, volunteer training through webinars and conference calls, networking with allied organizations and evaluation data management.
