Public Programming Intern (San Jose)

YOUR COMMITMENT

Hours per week: Approx. 20 hours per week

Commitment: 3-6 months

Location: primarily SPUR San Jose office with occasional travel to SPUR San Francisco office

Reports to: Public Programming Manager and SPUR San Jose Director

ABOUT SPUR

SPUR is one of North America's preeminent urban planning and public policy organizations. Through research, advocacy and public education, SPUR promotes good planning and good government. SPUR is a member-supported nonprofit organization. SPUR San Jose, launched in 2012, will increase the breadth of policy, research and programming efforts, marking an expansion from San Francisco and regional-based topics to those prevalent in Northern California's largest city, San Jose.

SUMMARY

SPUR is seeking a Public Programming Intern to work closely with the Public Programming Manager and SPUR's San Jose Director in overseeing forums, events and tours for SPUR San Jose. The Public Programming Intern will play a pivotal role in establishing SPUR's presence in San Jose. This position will require a flexible candidate comfortable in performing a multitude of tasks. This intern will be expected to engage with SPUR board members, policy staff and guest lecturers. Internships at SPUR are unpaid, however, interns will enjoy SPUR membership benefits, including free admission to all forums and tours and a one-year subscription to SPUR's magazine, The Urbanist.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assist Public Programming Manager in producing SPUR San Jose's public programs (forums, tours, etc.)
  • Coordinate logistics and communicate with venues, speakers, hosts and members
  • Serve as a liaison to like-minded organizations
  • Assist in researching and brainstorming quarterly public programs
  • Represent SPUR San Jose at events
  • Assist in production of quarterly calendar
  • Manage online events calendar and publicize programs through SPUR's social media channels
  • Work with policy staff members as needed

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Interest in cities, public policy and urban issues
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Friendly and social
  • Flexible and adaptable leader
  • A/V knowledge and ability to learn on the spot
  • Familiarity with Word, Excel, HTML and Mac operating system
  • Volunteer management or other supervision experience preferred
