Internship description

Organization Background:

HAI is a 45 year-old arts access and social service organization (hainyc.org) that operates a variety of arts-based programs. For more than four decades, HAI has been primarily supported through government contracts and foundations. However, in an attempt to lessen our organization's dependence on government funding, to expand its reach, and to develop ways of sustaining services through new revenue streams, we have begun to advance various cultural fee-for-service programs that are gaining steam.

Located in Long IslandCity, Queens, HAI has a full-time staff of 20 and part-time staff of 12. The vast majority of our services are provided off-site in schools, mental health facilities, hospitals, hospice centers, and after-school programs. Services include live performances at facilities, arts workshops and community based events. We also work with hundreds of performing artists and teaching artists across New York to provide art classes and trainings in our own gallery/studio. Our consumers include at-risk youth, children and adults with physical and mental disabilities, frail elderly, and other underserved populations.

Description:

HAI is looking for an intern to join our team who is passionate and driven, can multi-task and is confident in their abilities to deliver results on projects. The ideal candidate is someone who is comfortable sharing their opinions while being respectful of others in group settings. Strong writing skills and familiarity with graphic design and social media are essential to the role as well. If you have the drive it requires to work for a fast-paced nonprofit, as well as the ability to strategize, implement, and follow a plan we would very much like to speak with you.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with marketing team, and other internal stakeholders, to plan, organize and implement a system for consistent messaging on HAI's website, blog, and social media platforms
  • Understand the department's dual role: 1) to drive sales (and funding) of HAI services, and 2) to implement consistent branding and messaging across the agency
  • Update company website and social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, blogs, etc.) on an ongoing basis
  • Create and assemble a variety of print media (i.e. newsletters, brochures, flyers, etc.)
  • Chronicle HAI activities, including art workshops, community performances and education programs
  • Document HAI events using photo and video formats and upload onto multiple platforms
  • Coordinate targeted e-mail blasts to consumers
  • Participate in and contribute to team meetings

Please note as well that the position calls for an individual who is familiar with the Adobe Design Suite, and other graphic design and marketing applications, including:

  • InDesign
  • Illustrator
  • Photoshop
  • Constant Contact
  • HTML coding
  • Website updates
  • FileMaker Pro and/or other video editing software is a plus

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with a background in marketing, public administration, business or a similarly related field
  • Graphic design expertise
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to change
  • Knowledge of marketing trends and experience leveraging social networking websites (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
  • Ability to operate under pressure and meet multiple competing deadlines
  • Hours: 25 – 30 hours per week
  • Start on an intern basis; potential for F/T employment in 8-9 months
