Internship description

Missourians Organizing for Reform and Empowerment (MORE)

Summer Organizing Internship

Missourians Organizing for Reform and Empowerment (MORE) is Missouri's most innovative grassroots community organization of low- and moderate-income people. Since 2009, MORE has been building an organization that cuts across class, age and race lines to fight for social, economic and environmental justice in Missouri. We fight corporate power with people power, seeking to win victories through creative direct action, negotiation, legislative advocacy, strategic partnerships with other progressive organizations, and the creation of viable alternatives to current systems.

Our current projects include:

  • Running a city-wide ballot initiative campaign to divest public money from the fossil fuel industry.
  • Organizing direct actions targeting local fossil fuel corporation headquarters.
  • Launching a green workers association to fight for workers' rights and sustainable policies that combat climate change.
  • Stopping unjust foreclosures using direct action and legislative advocacy at the local level.
  • Working at our community garden.
  • Organizing with rural communities around the state to oppose the Prairie State coal plant.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Planning and participating in direct actions.
  • Identifying potential leaders and assisting in developing the leadership of grassroots members.
  • Developing and implementing campaign strategies with staff, members, and member-leaders.
  • Base-building and door knocking/canvassing/house visits.
  • Doing media work around actions and campaigns.
  • Recruiting new members to the organization.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work in multi-racial, multi-income groups.
  • Commitment to racial justice, multi-racial organizing, movement building and direct action organizing.
  • Interest in the intersections of workers' rights, climate justice, and economic justice.

The internship is unpaid, but we're willing to work with you to help find funding. Interns should be willing to work at least 20 hours/week and should be able to get transportation to 438 N. Skinker Blvd (right near the Skinker metro stop). We're flexible on start and end dates. For more information about MORE, go to www.facebook.com/organizemo.
