Title: Clean Water Research intern

Status: Intern, 10 week engagement

Reports to: Clean & Plentiful Water Program Director

Hours: 10 - 40 hours per week

BACKGROUND & SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY

Oregon Environmental Council (OEC) seeks a motivated intern with an interest in environmental policy, water and public health to undertake a research project related to protecting clean water and drinking water in Oregon. The intern will be responsible for researching and analyzing scientific and policy information to identify potential new projects or legislative recommendations to improve water quality in Oregon.

A successful candidate will have completed an undergraduate degree in a field related to environmental science, public policy, law, public health, or water, and may or may not be currently enrolled in an advanced degree program. The candidate will have good writing skills and experience in research as well as basic familiarity with water laws such as the Clean Water Act. OEC offers a collaborative, team-oriented, family-friendly workplace that treats employees and volunteers as responsible professionals. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

The intern will work with his or her supervisor to select one or more of the following projects, and write a brief report or memo summarizing findings and sources. Research will likely include online sources as well as contacting professionals directly via telephone or email.

  • Investigate which other states or local jurisdictions have banned lead wheel weights and the pros and cons of pursuing such a policy in Oregon.
  • Research financing mechanisms for green stormwater retrofits in urban areas.
  • Research how other states fund nonpoint source pollution prevention programs.
  • Research private drinking water well testing and safety programs in other states, and compliance with existing requirements in Oregon.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Status as a graduate level or exceptional undergraduate student
  • Excellent research, data collection and writing skills
  • Experience conducting environmental policy analysis

Desirable:

  • Familiarity with Oregon's communities
  • Engaged in a program related to environmental science, public policy, law, public health, or water
  • Self-motivated, resourceful and reliable
  • Ability to meet goals in a timely manner
  • Interest in public health and environmental protection
