Internship description

Since its founding more than a century ago, Oregon Health & Science University has grown into a world-class teaching hospital and research center that draws in students, scientists, and patients from across the country and around the world. At the same time, it retains its strong commitment to serving the local community, and to treating each patient as a unique individual. As the State's only health and research university, OHSU brings together patient care, research, education of the next generation of health care providers, and scientists to improve the health and well-being of all Oregonians. Its mission is both fundamental and profound: to improve the health and well-being of the state and its citizens.

The OHSU Foundation exists to secure private philanthropic support to advance OHSU's vital missions, and to invest and manage gifts responsibly to honor donors' wishes. Each year tens of thousands of donors contribute millions of dollars in financial support to OHSU through this organization. The Foundation also oversees the efforts of hundreds of volunteers who participate in community-based fund-raising programs and events supporting OHSU. This broad range of support places OHSU among Oregon's top beneficiaries of private philanthropy.

The OHSU Foundation currently has an opening for a temporary, full-time Intern in our Alumni Relations department. The Foundation's Alumni Relations department works closely with our colleagues at OHSU to serve over 35,000 alumni from the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, and Nursing. Reporting to the Director of Alumni Relations, the purpose of this internship will be to assist the department with two separate but inter-related projects that will add long term value to the Foundation. These projects will hone the intern's research skills and provide a legacy of key sources for this information that will be available to the Foundation after the internship is completed.

The two components of the internship are: to research and identify OHSU alumni who have attained prominent leadership positions in their specialty or discipline, or who have been recognized for contributions to their field. Secondly, to survey clinical departments with residency programs in the Schools of Dentistry and Medicine at OHSU. The intern will conduct a qualitative research survey to determine the current practice and the effectiveness of engagement between these departments and alumni of their graduate programs. This data will then be used in conjunction with data from comparator institutions to define best practices to optimize engagement of residency alumni at OHSU. Together, the two projects will strengthen the integrity of the Foundation's existing data and the acquisition of new data about our alumni.

The length of assignment is approximately 10-12 weeks at a full 40 hours per week, and the compensation is $10.00 per hour. Within normal business hours, actual times may be flexible to meet the intern's schedule.

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in research and data compilation, experience working with a donor database- preferably Raiser's Edge, a strong sense of initiative and persistence, excellent verbal communication skills, ability to prioritize tasks, and a vested interest in gaining experience in the nonprofit research area.
