Internship Description: Human Rights Watch ("HRW") is seeking an intern to primarily focus on the organization's diversity initiatives. The intern will be supervised by a Global HR Manager who co-chairs HRW's international diversity committee. The intern's projects will include researching and compiling recruitment related resources to ensure HRW is attracting candidates from diverse backgrounds; liaising with HRW's research divisions to ensure we are targeting appropriate audiences relevant to their field of work; creating region specific resources; and identifying student organization in major universities that would like to be added to HRW's recruitment listservs.
The intern should be able to commit to approximately 16 hours per week between Monday through Friday. The internship will be at least three (3) months in duration and scheduling can be flexible. A January start date is anticipated.
Internships are unpaid although work-study funds may be available. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other US and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.
Qualifications: The internship is open to students who are enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program for the duration of the internship term. Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated and reliable, have a professional telephone manner and strong attention to detail. Computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office, Internet applications) are required.
Applicants who are offered an internship, but who are not US permanent residents, US citizens, or in possession of a valid student visa, must apply for a J-1 visa through a sponsoring organization. This process can take several weeks and applicants will have to incur their own costs.
