The Social Science Research Council (SSRC) is an independent, not-for-profit research organization founded in 1923. Based in Brooklyn, New York, the SSRC mobilizes researchers, policy makers, professionals, activists, and other experts from the private and public sectors to develop innovative approaches to issues of critical social importance.
Measure of America is an initiative of the SSRC dedicated to stimulating fact-based public debate about, and drawing political attention to, issues of well-being and access to opportunity in the United States. The hallmark of this work is the American Human Development Index, a composite measure that reflects what most people believe are the basic ingredients of a good life: health, education, and income. Measure of America published the first-ever human development report for an affluent country in 2008, and it has since released additional reports at the national, state, and county levels. In addition, Measure of America produces thematic papers as well as interactive online tools.
Measure of America is currently seeking an intern to assist in researching, writing, and producing papers, reports, and online tools. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to participate in the development of future online reports for the program, and who wants to hone his or her research and writing skills in the process. The ideal intern would be able to come into the office 3–5 days per week for 2–3 months. A small stipend is included to cover transportation. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
Responsibilities
Duties, which will be performed under the supervision of program staff, include
- conducting literature reviews on diverse topics in the social sciences and public policy;
- writing short texts and possibly longer policy briefs that may be included in published reports;
- contributing to the project's online communications efforts; and
- participating in statistical research and data collection.
Qualifications
Applicants must be graduate students in the social sciences, human rights, public policy, or international affairs (though advanced undergraduates and recent graduates will also be considered) and must have
- a demonstrated interest in domestic social policy issues;
- a strong academic background and excellent writing skills; and
- a high level of comfort with using data to make arguments (advanced statistical training helpful but not necessary).
Please note that this internship is unpaid, with a small stipend for travel. When possible, school credit will be given.
