Internship Description

Title: Parent Advisor

Supervisor: CPRC Director

Part-Time Position (10-15 hours/week)

Job Purpose: To provide parent advising to underserved families of children with disabilities, and professionals who work with them, in the Denver metro area ensuring that families and professionals receive information and resources to enable them to make informed decisions, and working together to improve educational results for students with disabilities.

Pay Rate: Unpaid

Essential Job Responsibilities

¨ Flows information to parents/professionals; sends written materials; makes referrals to other organizations

¨ Informs parents of rights and responsibilities under Special Education law

¨ Maintains accurate records; inputs information into database

¨ Ensures that resource materials are filed properly and easily locatable to staff

¨ Prepares invoices, reports, memos, letters, and other documents as assigned, using word processing, spreadsheet, and/or database software

¨ Performs other duties as assigned

¨ Performs job responsibilities with integrity and responsibility

¨ Maintains confidentiality of information

Organizational Relationships

The Parent Advisor Intern reports directly to the CPRC Director.

Supervisory Responsibility

The Parent Advisor Intern has no supervisory responsibility.

Job Qualifications

Education or Formal Training

¨ Junior or Senior Undergraduate, or Graduate in Education, Social Work, Medicine, or a related field.

Required Skills and Knowledge

¨ Strong commitment to work in a team environment

¨ Strong willingness to take initiative

¨ Strong communication, organizational, leadership, and management skills

¨ Strong written communication skills

¨ Strong customer service skills including listening and problem solving skills

¨ Proficiency with databases, Word, and Excel

¨ Experience with photocopiers and other office equipment

Other Requirements

¨ Must follow proper safety procedures when performing physical job tasks

¨ Willingness to receive training in how to advocate for parents using Special Education law

Preferred Requirements

¨ Bi-lingual
