Job description and responsibilities

Yspaniola is seeking an Education Coordinator to direct the activities of a newly created Literacy Center in the community of Batey Libertad. The Literacy Center currently offers tutoring sessions for primary school aged students, and will expand its activities over the next couple of months to include other services identified as priorities by the community. This is an exciting position that offers flexibility and the opportunity to create and design new activities, use innovative teaching techniques, establish partnerships with other education organizations and foster community engagement. The Education Coordinator will work closely with the Local Program Director so as to mutually support each other in their responsibilities.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Education Coordinator main duties include (but are not necessarily be limited to):

  • Being the main education contact for all program beneficiaries and their families;
  • Monitoring student progress on a regular basis;
  • Maintaining student files (both electronic and hard files);
  • Preparing additional materials and worksheets for students that are level appropriate;
  • Regularly checking with teachers from the local public school and students' parents to understand how to better support students;
  • Developing relationships with local leaders and community members to foster community engagement;
  • Based on community demands and interests, working towards expanding services beyond primary school students (i.e. Adult Literacy classes, Early Education…);
  • Seeking grants to support the Literacy Center programs.

Qualifications

This position demands a dynamic, open-minded, flexible individual who can adapt easily to a range of situations.

  • Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) with a focus in International Development, Education, Community Engagement or related field;
  • Fluency in Spanish (and willingness to learn Haitian Creole);
  • 2 to 3 years of experience working in a developing country, preferably in an educational institution (be it in a formal or non-formal setting);
  • Experience teaching/working with children between the ages of 6 and 15;
  • Grant writing experience.

Room is covered. A small stipend is provided, but candidates are encouraged to apply for outside grants and fellowships to support their time in the Dominican Republic.
