CHILDREN AT RISK is currently seeking candidates to fill internship positions with our research and publication team. The selected candidates will have the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of publishing, working on a variety of CHILDREN AT RISK projects, including the biennial publication, Growing Up in Houston, two peer-reviewed journals, and other publications. The two journals, Journal of Applied Research on Children and Journal of Family Strengths, are edited by CHILDREN AT RISK andfocus on research dealing with a wide variety of children's issues, ranging from human trafficking and public education to food insecurity and parenting. Founded in 1989, CHILDREN AT RISK is an active research and advocacy group dedicated to improving the quality of life of Texas' children in the areas of physical and mental health, education reform, human trafficking, basic needs and juvenile justice reform. We are the leading source of accurate information on children's issues and an advocate and catalyst for change concerning the needs of all children in Texas.
Responsibilities/Potential Projects
Specific responsibilities will be dependent upon each candidate's skills, career goals, interests and CHILDREN AT RISK's priorities. CHILDREN AT RISK expects that this internship will be used as a career development tool for the selected candidates and hopes to maximize the selected individual's internship experience.
We are seeking dedicated and focused candidates who possess excellent communication and writing skills to assist in all phases of the scholarly publication process, including:
Acquisitions editorial
- Research potential journal contributors and peer reviewers;
- Generate letters of invitation;
- Guide submitted manuscripts through the peer review process.
Manuscript editorial
- Guide accepted manuscripts through the copy editing process;
- Prepare manuscripts for publication.
Marketing and publicity
- Work collaboratively to generate creative journal dissemination strategies;
- Produce fact sheets and summaries of articles;
- Assist with press releases and other communication materials;
- Write potential interview questions for authors;
- Integrate new research with social media efforts;
- Design and write a blog to highlight the research in Journal of Applied Research on Children.
Other potential projects include:
- Work with members of the CHILDREN AT RISK Institute (JARC's academic advisory board), comprised of prominent issue area experts;
- Participate in site visits of other organizations, offering exposure to multiple facets of child advocacy;
- Research and analyze key children's issues for various publications and events;
- Other strategies, projects and ideas as developed by our selected intern to fit his/her interests.
Preferred qualifications
We are in search of dedicated individuals to be key members of our team. A sense of humor and a passion for social justice issues, along with the belief that education and advocacy on children's issues are essential for societal improvement are strong plusses.
All candidates must have strong attention to detail and a professional communications style, both written and verbal. Experience in publishing or editing is a plus. Candidates should have a strong work ethic, positive attitude and work well individually and in a team oriented environment.
