Internship description

Organization Name: San Francisco Recreation and Park Department

Program: Youth Stewardship Program, a free environmental service-learning program

Duties:

  • Responsible for leading and engaging 2nd - 12th grade students on thematic field trips to city parks and natural areas.
  • Utilize environmental education curriculums and resources to create meaningful hands-on service learning experiences for youth outside.
  • Coordinate youth experience with teachers and SF Recreation and Parks.
  • Maintain relevant records for the Youth Stewardship Program.
  • Participate in related community volunteer opportunities, events and meetings.
  • Take initiative on special projects and work occasional flexible work schedules.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Enjoy working with underserved youth in a motivational and supportive manner.
  • Able to interact positively with the public and internal teammates professionally.
  • Interest in the environment and working outdoors.
  • Good verbal and written communication, ability to meet deadlines.
  • Computer literate; MS Word, MS Excel, Internet.
  • Previous related experience or background in biology, environmental studies, or other related subjects or park fields.
  • Multilingual, ideally in Spanish, Mandarin, and/or Cantonese.

Required Qualifications:

  • Degree from an accredited college, including 4 year university or 2 year college.
  • Local residency.
  • Willing to work occasional off hours and within inclement weather outside.
  • California State Drivers' License with a good driving record.

Training:

  • New educators will be trained on the job to join current team of interns in San Francisco natural history, youth leadership techniques, restoration skills and coordination.
  • Trainings will be coordinated by the Youth Volunteer and Education Coordinator and current YSP Environmental Educators.

Time Commitment: 40 hours per week, schedule will be set upon hire (either M-F or T-S).

Start Date: Tuesday, February 26th (date flexible by a few weeks) in San Francisco, California
