About us: ROC-United is a national organization of worker centers for restaurant workers, dedicated to improving working conditions in the restaurant industry. ROC-United is a membership based multi-racial organization that is worker driven. ROC-United pursues a workers' rights agenda by combining innovative legal strategies with direct-action organizing, building power for low-income workers and providing legal support in worker campaigns against employers.
About you: Based in Chicago. ROC-United is seeking a highly motivated intern for 2013, or to start immediately to work on exciting and cutting-edge community/labor organizing programs. Qualified applicants should have a passion for social justice and labor/employment rights, a strong work ethic, and ability to creativity use their skills within an organizing framework.
Gain experience working in a fast-paced organization working for change by assisting workers in workplace justice campaigns, providing know your rights legal trainings to workers, engaging in local legislative policy reform campaigns, and conducting research on violations of labor, health, and anti-discrimination law in the restaurant industry. Develop communication and collaborating skills by exploring relationships with local legal aid organizations and labor rights and immigrant rights groups to assist in litigation and develop local policy initiatives. In addition help us educate employers on their legal obligations to their workers, assisting them in complying with local labor, health, and anti-discrimination law.
Minimum commitment is 5/ hours a week.
