Elders Share the Arts is a pioneering award-winning community arts organization. ESTA's mission is to empower older adults to find imaginative ways to express and share their life experiences through the arts. Our teaching artists work directly with a culturally diverse group of well and frail elders in community centers, libraries, senior centers, nursing homes, and hospitals. ESTA classes nurture elders' creativity while giving them opportunities for active, social engagement in building community.

Description:

ESTA is seeking Community Arts Intern(s) to assist our Teaching Artists on site at schools, libraries, senior centers, and other community sites throughout New York. Intern(s) will participate in gathering stories, transforming the memories into a specific type of art form, and support the group throughout the process. Intern(s) will also participate in the planning and implementation of the sessions. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is looking to learn more about working with elders in a community-based arts program.

Type of Position: Intern/Volunteer (unpaid) at least college age Minimum Time Commitment: 3-6 hrs/week flexible * for a minimum of 4 months

Fill date: Immediately

Where: Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens

Qualifications:

  • background in theater, visual arts, dance, or digital media
  • be socially mature and self-confident
  • be able to take direction and criticism well
  • be able to digest new information quickly and apply it productively
  • be consistent and dependable in their work habits
  • have good communication skills
  • enjoy multi-tasking and creative problem-solving
  • work comfortably and effectively in a highly collaborative environment

NOTE ON TIME COMMITMENT: Duration is flexible to meet university requirements, but a minimum commitment of three months is optimal.
