Wheeling Forward is a non-profit organization based in New York City dedicated to providing guidance and resources to disabled individuals for the purpose of achieving their goals today rather than tomorrow. We provide a vast array of services to disabled individuals, including providing wheelchairs to those in need, organizing recreational events, and providing all forms of advocacy for disability-related issues, just to name a few. We work mostly with those who have recently become disabled and assist them with navigating the new challenges posed by having a disability to achieve their goals and live a fulfilling life. Wheeling Forward seeks a Multimedia Intern with photography and/or video production experience to support the development of compelling content about our charity work to share with external audiences. The Multimedia Intern will have the opportunity to build a unique portfolio of work focused on mission-driven visual content within the disabled community. Responsibilities include shooting photos and video, assisting with video editing and the creation of multimedia features, and performing website updates. Other tasks may be assigned and occasional event attendance (weekend/evening) is desired. The intern will join a very dedicated team, passionate about helping disabled individuals improve their lives. The intern will have a unique opportunity to gain exposure to a wide variety of persons and events within the disabled community.

The Intern's main responsibilities will include:

Maintain an image bank and video archive

Manage multimedia asset gathering

Develop a multimedia strategy

Edit and select photos for use in visual communications

Produce and edit multimedia or video projects

Perform website updates and maintenance

Research trends and best practices in multimedia communications

Other media-related responsibilities as they arise

We are looking for a Spring/Summer 2013 intern/volunteer that is interested in gaining experience with a small and flexible non-profit that needs assistance in expanding our current multimedia database and marketing effort.

Requirements include strong passion for and commitment to those living with disabilities and/or disability advocacy. College students or recent graduates working toward a career in visual communications or photojournalism with an emphasis on documentary photography or film/video production are preferred. Further qualifications include proficiency with Photoshop; strong writing, editing and communication skills; well organized and detail oriented, with the ability to work independently; basic HTML skills and proficiency in Adobe CS5; resourceful, with an eye for identifying inefficiencies and streamlining processes. The ideal person would be able to commit to at least 11 – 15 hours per week during the term of the internship and can start in March 2013. All necessary equipment will be provided.

A $500 stipend will be paid for the 3 month period of the internship and any expenses associated with the internship will be covered. Further, we are happy to help you arrange to receive school credit, fellowships, work-study or any other form of compensation available through your school or other institution.
