Description

Are you concerned about policing, prisons, and criminal justice? Do you hope for a world with alternatives to such harsh conditions and systems?

Come work with the Criminal Justice Initiative (CJI) and help make a difference!

CJI is a cross-class, racially diverse, funding circle made up of community organizers and activist donors. Using a consensus process, circle members collectively and democratically fund grassroots activism in order to transform the criminal justice system in the United States.

CJI was among the first funders of some now-leaders at the forefront of criminal justice and policing organizing - Critical Resistance,Women on the Rise Telling Herstory (WORTH), Transgender, Gender Variant, Intersex Justice Project (TGIJP), and more.

CJI is looking for an intern to work closely with our circle coordinator doing a diverse range of tasks to support the general operation and grantmaking capabilities of the circle. Tasks include:

  • Updating and maintaining CJI website
  • Researching potential funders to support the circle's work
  • Assisting with bi-annual fundraising mailings
  • Administrative support of grants cycle
  • Record-keeping for CJI database
  • Assistance in meeting planning and preparation (including coordination of travel, food, printing documents, supplies, etc)
  • Note-taking at meetings (bi-annual)
  • General support to circle coordinator

This is a great opportunity to learn about philanthropy and grant-making as well as how people are making a difference and transforming the criminal justice system in the United States. Most importantly, it is a chance to learn about a new, innovative, social justice model of funding social justice movement-building that is unparalleled in most other types of grantmaking institutions.

We are looking for someone who can ideally devote 10-15 hours a week (up to 1 and ½ workdays) to this position, but can be flexible based on your needs. The internship will take place in Brooklyn and lower Manhattan. We are able to provide a stipend to cover a MetroCard for travel, but unfortunately no other payment. We can, however, provide school credit and any other connections or recommendations that would be helpful in forwarding your work in this field. This is an ideal position for a student or young organizer.

Preference will be given to formerly incarcerated people, people of color, low-income people, LGBTQ people, and other people disproportionately impacted by policing and prisons.

How to apply

Please send a resume and cover letter explaining your interest in the position to Aleah Bacquie Vaughn at aleahb@solidago.org by September 4th, 2012. Please write "CJI Intern" in the subject line.
