Brief description of the project
Interns can work at one of several medical posts / health clinics where interns without a lot of experience will work closely with a doctor. The doctor has more time to explain the illnesses and treatments than the staff at the bigger hospitals. The main areas are general medicine, gynecology and pediatrics. Sometimes visits to local communities are also arranged.
Activities
Interns working with local hospitals will serve the poor residents of communities by providing preventive health care and education, and offering free and low cost health services. Local doctors and nurses will assist you in learning about the practice of medicine in resource-poor settings, as well as providing an invaluable perspective regarding the unique health care needs and concerns of the surrounding communities.
Depending on your medical experience and Spanish language skills you may be asked to assist with check-ups, triage, suturing wounds and echos. You may also help with vaccination and public health campaigns.
- Pre-med and 1st year or 2nd year of medical school: Triage: taking weight, height, blood pressure, heart rate, temperature Hospital wards: Making beds, cleaning, talking with patients Materials: Preparing materials, sterilizing equipment
- 3rd and 4th year of medical school/Licensed doctor or nurse
Topico: Cleaning wounds, giving injections and sutures
Consult rooms and specialized departments: assisting doctor taking physicals and consults.
Campaigns: Giving vaccinations, taking records, drawing blood samples
INTERN REQUIREMENTS
- Time period: At least 4 weeks time
- Study: Medical study, medicine or nursery
- Language: Spanish at an intermediate level
- Characteristics: We require that our interns have an interest in medicine in the developing world and that they are able to maintain a positive attitude in sometimes less-than-ideal living and working conditions.
