Our work spans across four key areas [housing, health care, legal protections, and economic opportunity], creating paths from crisis to stability and on to success.

Heartland Human Care Services' (HHCS) Refugee & Immigrant Community Services (RICS) provides on-site English language and English language civics classes for adult immigrants from over 20 countries.

We are looking for an intern to serve in our English Language Training (ELT) Program.

Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Assisting teachers in English as a Second Language (ESL) and English Language Civics classes, including tutoring and/or teaching classes
  • Creating and implementing workshops and activities for our students
  • Helping with other projects, reports, and administrative tasks as necessary
  • Minimum of 10 hours per week availability, minimum two-month commitment

Reports to: Supervisor of English Language Training

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Interest in working with immigrants in a multi-cultural, multi-lingual, and multi-ethnic environment
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Patience and flexibility
  • Computer proficiency
  • Some knowledge of ESL and teaching or tutoring experience is helpful
  • Language proficiency in one or more: Arabic, Polish, Russian, Spanish, and Ukrainian is preferred, but not required.
