Description: Seeking an intern for a minimum of 2 + months, possibly more, working at least 4 hours a week, with the Environmental Stewardship project of Friends of Brook Park. Hours are flexible, but need to commit to at least four hours on one day a week .
The successful Intern will assist in all aspects of the community garden program, maintaining public access and open hours, greeting the public and welcoming and encouraging greater volunteer involvement. The Intern will also consult with garden leaders on leadership and recruitment issues with the potential to initiate more green space project s in the community.
The intern will also help coordinate program events, such as the Film Screenings, Harvest Fair, Xmas Tree Recycling and more.
Other responsibilities include caring for plant material and watering and maintenance. Tending to Greenhouse. Helping with Chicken Coop.
If a candidate has a particular interest or project they wish to pursue related to community gardening, they are welcome to contact us about developing a personalized intern experience. Opportunities can be seasonal but are available year-round. The position typically requires at least 4 hours per week invested in outdoor work.
This work is ideal for the hands-on, contemplative person. Do you enjoy the outdoors? How about trying your hand at urban gardening? Helping to sustain long-term conservation projects, you will work together with local people and other volunteers. Gardening is a wonderful way to make friends, get some fresh air, exercise and help preserve New York City's natural beauty. All that is necessary is enthusiasm, self-reliance, patience and an open mind.
Activities can include: • Tree planting, footpath construction and maintenance, gardening, and landscaping
• Occasional trash pick up from the garden perimeters
• Nurturing plant seedlings
• Maintaining the grounds and its fruit and vegetable gardens
• Teaching or assisting in programs for environmental education
• Helping with mulching and wood-chopping
• Helping develop a comprehensive species list of the existing wildlife in and around the park
• Photographing, recording and bloggin events and activities
Also managing greenhouse and assisting with chicken coop.
Interns are given references upon completion of the program, and during the program staff generally communicate with academic or other supervisors which the intern may have. This communication is conducted in the specific manner agreed upon once the intern applies for the position.
