Special Events and Development Intern - Summer 2013

Posted on: May 2, 2013

Posted by: Immigration Equality

Description

Want to join in the fight for LGBT and HIV-positive families impacted by US immigration law? Interested in public interest law and advocacy? Love planning and executing events?

Immigration Equality is seeking a special events and development intern in New York City to work 20 hours per week for a commitment of at least three months (Monday-Friday 9:30-5:30 only, start/end dates negotiable). Because Immigration Equality's office is structured as an open, team-oriented, non-hierarchical space, development interns will also gain insight into many different facets of non-profit work, all while helping Immigration Equality raise more funds and execute more events to advance its mission.

Specifically, development interns will gain:

  • Hands on experience with the planning and execution of special events
  • An overview of non-profit fundraising, donor communications, event planning, proficiency in our online database, Salesforce, and experience with managing the odds and ends of a busy not-for-profit organization
  • The opportunity to draft fundraising and event emails, blog posts, and social media updates
  • Basic knowledge of donor prospect research as well as prospective foundation and corporate funders
  • An introduction to the field of LGBT and HIV asylum law

A qualified candidate will display:

  • A commitment to winning social justice for LGBT, HIV-positive, and immigrant families
  • Strong communication and organization skills
  • A willingness to perform administrative tasks with enthusiasm and attention to detail
  • An understanding of the importance of confidentiality
  • Bilingual desired but not mandatory

Immigration Equality is the only national organization devoted to winning asylum for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and HIV-positive people fleeing persecution, and to fighting for equal treatment under U.S.immigration law for LGBT and HIV-positive families. Over the last year, the organization was covered in such media as the New York Times, People magazine, Newsweek, CNN, MSNBC, NPR and many more for its ongoing asylum wins and battle to gain equality for LGBT families. Please check our website for more details.
