CHILDREN AT RISK is currently seeking candidates to fill Internship positions working as part of its acclaimed Center for Social Measurement and Evaluation in the field of research and data analysis. The selected candidates will have the opportunity to learn from a dedicated and creative group of researchers and analysts.

Founded in 1989, CHILDREN AT RISK is a research and advocacy group dedicated to improving the quality of life of Texas' children in the areas of physical and mental health, education reform, human trafficking, basic needs and juvenile justice reform. We are the leading source of accurate information on children's issues and an advocate and catalyst for change concerning the needs of all children in Texas.

Responsibilities/Potential Projects Specific responsibilities will be dependent upon each candidate's skills, career goals, interests and CHILDREN AT RISK's priorities. CHILDREN AT RISK expects that this internship will be used as a career development tool for the selected candidates and hopes to maximize the selected individual's internship experience.

We are seeking dedicated and focused candidates that possess excellent research and data analysis skills to assist in advocacy efforts in a variety of areas, with an emphasis on public education but will across issue areas including school food and human trafficking.

Potential projects include:

  • Collect and analyze quantitative data for the organization's statewide school rankings;
  • Conduct a meta-analysis of literature on the impact of extended learning time in public education, accompanied by a survey of school districts to ascertain their school time policies;
  • Assist with secondary data collection and analysis, surveying, and in-depth interviews relating to a report on the state of public schools in the wake of state budget cuts;
  • Assist with the development and standardization of metrics used by corporations to measure the impact of their charitable giving;
  • Design a survey that can be used to collect student performance data from private schools;
  • Design and disseminate a survey for school district that will gauge their participation in school breakfast programs;
  • Support the research and data team with special projects as necessary.

Preferred qualifications

We are in search of dedicated individuals to be key members of our team. A sense of humor and a passion for social justice issues, along with the belief that education and advocacy on children's issues are essential for societal improvement, are strong plusses.

Demonstrated interest in research and data analysis is strongly preferred, as well as a working knowledge of Excel and/or SPSS. All candidates must be professional, with good written and verbal communication skills. Candidates should have a strong work ethic, positive attitude and work well individually and in a team-oriented environment.
