Organization Summary

Crittenton has provided services to more than 20,000 adolescent women in the Greater Washington region for 123 years. From 1887 through the 1970's, the Florence Crittenton Home of Washington, DC provided residential, health, employment and educational services to single pregnant women. In 1983, we closed our residential facility and initiated our current school-based programs. Our positive youth development programs encourage adolescent women to build on their individual strengths. Three primary strategic objectives for program participants guide the content of our work:

  1. Increase the adoption of healthy behaviors
  2. Improve academic performance
  3. Improve workforce readiness and career development

Building on its historical experience, Crittenton has evolved into an effective 21st century partner whose vision for healthy and productive children, youth and families in Montgomery County and Washington, DC is closely aligned with that of numerous funders in the region. Crittenton's mission as a youth development organization has a singular focus – strengthening the ability of teen women to identify, embrace and achieve their academic, career and life goals. In supporting these women who are experiencing life challenges, we provide a warm, supportive atmosphere which encourages self understanding and self direction. We employ national best practices to develop and deliver holistic programs that ensure we are a consistent and positive presence in the lives of the teen women we serve.
