Internship description

Founded in 1979, the National Immigration Law Center is the only national legal advocacy organization in the U.S. exclusively dedicated to defending and advancing the rights of low-income immigrants and their families. We envision a U.S. society in which all people—regardless of their race, gender, immigration or economic status—are treated equally, fairly, and humanely, have equal access to justice, education, government resources and economic opportunities, and are able to achieve their full potential as human beings.

Description

The National Immigration Law Center's DC Office is looking for law students and graduate students for law and policy internships. Interns provide support to NILC researchers in one or more of the following program areas:

  • Education Access— e.g., DREAM Act
    • Economic Justice — e.g., Child Tax Credit, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP or food stamps)
  • Worker's Rights — e.g., E-Verify (employment eligibility verification)
  • Health — e.g., Affordable Care Act (health care reform)

Within each of these substantive areas, research intern duties include:

  • Providing research support to NILC research efforts through research and analysis.
  • Preparing drafts, summaries, and charts, and helping prepare NILC publications.

o Spanish and other language skills are beneficial.

o Independent quantitative and qualitative research skills valued.

o Understanding of various computer programs is also important.

  • Attend, analyze, and help organize public congressional or advocacy events.
  • Administrative support to NILC.

Duration and Time Commitment

6-10 weeks, minimum of 10 hours per week. Full-time during summer

Compensation

No monetary compensation. Academic credit may be available, depending on the school or institution in which the intern is enrolled.
