The Federal Affairs Department, which handles all federal legislation and regulatory issues for The HSUS, seeks interns to help with key projects necessary to the furtherance of our goals.
Interns have the opportunity to hone research and writing skills, strengthen effective verbal communication and networking skills, to use skills to address real-world issues relating to animal protection legislation, gain greater understanding of the federal legislative process and current laws and policy as they relate to animals, practice effective time management and develop grassroots advocacy experience.
This is a great option for law students, political science students, or anyone with a passion for making a difference in the lives of animals.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: assisting staff with maintenance of updated Hill contact lists; delivering documents to congressional offices; assisting with research and writing projects; mobilizing membership on key legislative initiatives; attending hearings, briefings, and meetings on Capitol Hill and preparing reports for staff; and completing miscellaneous tasks of an administrative nature.
No specific academic major is required; however, interns must currently be enrolled in college or have at minimum a bachelor's degree. Preferred candidates will have a strong work ethic and be willing to take on any project. Priority consideration is given to interns who can commit to a minimum of 28 hours per week for 12 weeks, however a part-time schedule will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Some long days and/or weekend work may be necessary.
This internship is unpaid; however, course credit can be arranged. Interns must pass a criminal background check and sign a waiver and release of liability. Work is located in our Washington, D.C., offices.
