Position Description

AMCHP Women's and Infant Health Intern

Spring 2013

The Association of Maternal & Child Health Programs is a national resource, partner and advocate for state public health leaders and others working to improve the health of women, children, youth and families, including those with special health care needs. The Women's and Infant Health (WIH) Team is accountable for development, implementation and evaluation of program activities related to women and infant's health.

Position Description & Scope of Work

AMCHP seeks a graduate student intern for Spring 2013. The intern will work with the Women's and Infant Health team on a variety of projects and initiatives, and will also have an opportunity to work with other AMCHP program and policy staff on various crosscutting issues. Potential projects can include:

  • Compile information for an issue brief on coordination between Title V and Title X
  • Conduct environmental scan to help contribute to national scan of state level programs and policies addressing preconception health
  • Serve as lead for the team's social media efforts
  • Work with the team lead on home visiting to develop a needs and strengths assessment for the Home Visiting Technical Assistance Coordinating Center

In addition, the intern will be expected to provide varying degrees of administrative and technical support to ongoing WIH initiatives and projects, including:

  • Life Course Metrics Project
  • Optimizing Health Reform to Improve Birth Outcomes Action Learning Collaborative (ALC)
  • AMCHP's Best Practice data base: the MCH Innovation Station
  • AMCHP web site

Responsibilities for these ongoing projects may include: maintaining files and archiving project records; supporting meetings and conferences; coordinating distance learning opportunities such as webinars; supporting data collection, analysis and reporting activities; attending meetings and conferences on behalf of AMCHP and maintaining relationships with our partners and members.

Internship Duration

AMCHP's office is ordinarily open for business Monday through Friday from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. Actual work hours will be flexible to accommodate as much as possible the needs of both AMCHP and the intern.

Start Date: January 2013 (TBD based on AMCHP and Intern needs)

End Date: TBD based on AMCHP and Intern needs*

*AMCHP expects a 12 week minimum commitment from interns.

Overall Internship Program Objectives

AMCHP's intern program is designed to fulfill six objectives:

1) To enhance the intern's understanding of Title V's role in the public health system;

2) To allow interns to gain practical work experience;

3) To provide opportunities for interns to more fully explore their strengths and interests;

4) To benefit AMCHP members by providing them with vital information in a timely manner;

5) To provide AMCHP an opportunity to become involved in the preparation of future public health professionals; and,

6) To provide AMCHP with quality personnel to supplement staff.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a masters degree in public health
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Self-motivated with strong organizational skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs
  • Knowledge and/or experience in analysis of qualitative data (preferred)
  • Basic understanding of public health and/or maternal and child health (preferred)

Hours/Compensation

  • Spring commitment preferred (January to May)
  • Part-time schedule – 12-15 hours/week (exact dates/times can be negotiated)
  • Rate of compensation is $15 per hour. Benefits are not provided.
