The Syrian Expatriates Organization (SEO) has openings for interns in Spring 2013 seeking to work in Washington D.C. in support of the democracy movement in Syria. The Syrian Expatriates is a broad and inclusive organization of Syrians living in the US and Canada working towards the establishment of a free and democratic Syria. This position is unpaid. You will work as part of a fast-paced team and support the activities of the organization, including its Board of Directors, Government Affairs Director and Program Director.
Responsibilities:
- Assist the Program Director in coordinating humanitarian relief and medical aid into Syria
- Assist in grant applications, attend meetings at think tanks and development groups on behalf of the SEO
- Assist in monitoring policy developments on US and international community policy towards Syria, opposition matters and developments in Syria
- Assist on a variety of communications matters, including correspondence with journalists and media organizations and writing and editing press releases and other communications
- Work closely with the Government Affairs Director to initiate, manage, and/or coordinate outreach to Congress and the Administration in collaboration with members of the SEO and the Syrian American community
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements:
Undergraduate student or higher in the areas of international relations, political science, communications, journalism, public policy or other related fields.
The ideal candidate for this position will have excellent academic credentials, superb writing skills, strong communication skills (both verbal and written) and will be a strong team-player. Reading and writing fluency in Arabic is not required, but preferred.
