ReThink Media is a unique, non-profit organization focused on building the individual and collaborative communications capacity of nonprofit think tanks, experts, and advocacy groups working toward a more constructive US foreign and national security policy, the protection of human and civil rights and strengthening our democracy. ReThink Media's mission is to provide these organizations with access to state-of-the-art media technologies, expert communications training, strategic communications support in running media campaigns and providing the latest in public opinion, media and messaging research.

Description: ReThink Media's paid Internship and Fellowship programs provide talented undergraduate (internships) and graduate students (fellowships) in media and communications, public relations, digital and online communications, journalism, design, and non-profit management with hands-on experience in the field of nonprofit political and advocacy communications. Fellows and Interns get training and real-work experience in applying the latest media tools and strategies to existing campaigns and organizations as well as the opportunity to make professional contacts and be mentored by experienced professionals. Successful candidates will be exposed to a wide range of media and communications skills and responsibilities including administrative and research activities.

Depending on the skill set of the intern or fellow, upcoming projects include but are not limited to:

  • Building and maintaining targeted media lists and top tier journalist profiles.
  • Monitoring traditional and online media coverage and public opinion.
  • Researching and conducting opinion and media coverage and framing analysis.
  • Assisting in building and managing rapid response media initiatives and campaigns.
  • Researching and updating online content in our website and media resource and training library.
  • Assisting in auditing groups' press materials, online media rooms and expert profiles.
  • Assisting in editing, drafting and pitching media content to key reporters and outlets.
  • Assisting in opposition research and analysis.
  • Assisting groups in building their capacity to use the latest in online and social media tools.
  • Assisting in developing and designing organizational presentation and marketing materials.
  • Assisting organizations or campaigns, as required, with hosting online press conferences, planning news events, and drafting press materials.
  • Assist with web and database development projects (drupal background a plus).
  • For nonprofit management fellows, assisting in running, managing and administering a nonprofit.

The ideal candidate(s) will be undergraduate or graduate students in media and communications or journalism, public relations or marketing, in digital or online communications, web development, graphic design, or nonprofit management with a strong commitment to or background in one or more of the fields/policy issues represented by the groups that ReThink Media works with.

Hours and Compensation ReThink Media Interns and Fellows are expected to work at least 16-20 hours per week for three months. Undergraduate Interns are paid $10.50 per hour. Graduate fellows are paid $12.50 per hour. At present we are looking to hire 2-3 individuals for our DC office and 1-2 for our CA office for our fall 2013 program. Successful candidates may also have the opportunity to continue working up to a total of six months.
