THIS for Diplomats (THIS), formerly The Hospitality and Information Service, is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting friendship, citizen diplomacy, and mutual understanding among nations. To advance this mission, we organize educational, cultural, and informational programs and services to Washington, DC's diplomatic community. Some of our recent programs include: a panel on The Changing Role of Women in Asia with dignitaries from the region, foreign conversation and language exchanges, and an insider tour of the Federal Reserve. Ideal candidates should share our strong interest in the international affairs sector. Interns will not only have the opportunity to interact with ambassadors and diplomats, but they will also work with our network of volunteers (all of whom have substantial government and international work experience) on a regular basis. Additionally, successful interns will have the possibility to attend programs or lectures of interest. This is an unpaid position, but a $7 per day transportation/lunch stipend will be provided.

Main Intern Responsibilities will include (but are not limited to)

  • Data entry:Utilize Avectra, a CRM database, to maintain a central location for diplomatic and volunteer contact information. Interns will also use this software to register participants for programs and services.
  • Event Planning: Assist in organizing frequent and multi-faceted events. Arrange logistics of meetings and events
  • Internal PR/Communications: Aid in editing the calendar of events and newsletter.
  • External PR/Publications: Design and edit promotional materials. Update and maintain social media accounts and the THIS website.
  • Administrative: Screen calls and responds to basic inquiries for volunteers and diplomats. Assist Program Manager with correspondence for programs (confirmation letters, waiting list notices, faxes, additional telephone calls).
  • Other general office duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Ideal Candidate

  • Self-motivated, works well with a wide range of people, and has the ability to follow through on projects with limited supervision
  • Competent with MS Word, MS Excel and MS Outlook
  • Possesses excellent communication and writing skills. Great attention to detail is also required
  • Has a strong interest in international affairs and the foreign diplomatic community of Washington, DC
  • Has previous experience in the planning and execution of special events
  • Is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
  • Can handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Oral and written proficiency in a foreign language
