In New York City, iMentor partners with public schools to ensure every student in the schools receives a mentor. iMentor also provides its curriculum, technology, and best practices to help nonprofits run effective programs in the iMentor model. Since 1999, iMentor has connected 11,000 students with mentors. This year, iMentor is serving 2,400 mentor-mentee pairs in New York City and 2,000 more nationwide. iMentor has been recognized through funding by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Lumina Foundation, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, and the Robin Hood Foundation, and is a subgrantee of the federal Social Innovation Fund.

Position Overview

iMentor is seeking a dynamic intern to join our exciting social enterprise, iMentor Interactive (iMi). The Social Enterprise Intern will support our Partnership Team, which seeks to ensure that organizations that have signed on to use iMentor's mentoring best practices and technology are able to deliver high impact, mentoring programs with measurable results. In addition, the intern will support our Outreach Team, which is responsible for identifying prospective iMi partner organizations. Currently, iMentor Interactive empowers partner organizations across the country to build a national mentoring movement. iMentor currently has 13 partner organizations, including City Year, College Track, and Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star.

Reporting to a Partnership Manager, the Social Enterprise Intern will support the ongoing research activities of the iMi Partnership and Outreach teams to help identify prospective partners and continue to scale up partner support in key areas. In this role, the Social Enterprise Intern will work closely with Partnership Managers and the Director of Outreach. The intern will be responsible for researching the following areas: national education/mentoring issues, prospect organizations and best practices in mentoring.

Responsibilities

The Partnership Team is committed to making this internship a valuable learning experience. To that end we will work closely with the Social Enterprise Intern and provide the support s/he will need to fulfill the responsibilities outlined below. The Intern's main responsibilities include:

  • Partnership Support – Collaborate with Partnership Managers on special projects including building demo sites, identifying communication tools to support remote partnerships, and creating multimedia collateral.
  • Research – Conduct program research related to recruitment, screening, training; pair support and program design; college transition and success programs) Stay abreast of issues relating to education/mentoring programs nationwide, as well as the challenges and opportunities to college readiness and persistence among low-income, first-generation college students.
  • Outreach – Support the Director of Outreach in identifying prospective iMi partner organizations and fielding inquiries.
  • Administrative Support – Provide logistical support for events and onboarding new partners, including photocopying, faxing, filing, typing and data input.

The internship will start in late May and continue throughout the summer. Interns work up to 40 hours per week and are compensated at $10/hour.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate (junior or senior) or graduate degree program
  • Prior office experience a must; customer service experience preferred
  • Strong research, written and verbal communication skills
  • Interest in education and youth development , bonus points for demonstrated interest in issues of college access and readiness
  • Interest in networking and learning about other departments within the organization to become more holistically knowledgeable about iMentor's mission and work
  • Resourceful, self-motivated, and able to work independently yet know when to ask for help
  • Comfort with learning new computer programs
  • Must be responsible, trustworthy, and detail oriented
  • Be inquisitive, creative, flexible and confident
  • Strong desire to learn and develop professionally; ability to implement feedback to strengthen work
  • Aligned in thought and action with iMentor's values (http://www.imentor.org/values)

  • Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory fingerprinting and criminal background check, conducted by the Division of Human Resources at the New York City Department of Education
