One To World's Global Classroom Fellow

SPRING 2013

Duration: One Semester

One To World, a not-for-profit educational organization offering programs to New York City's 50,000 international students and scholars, is seeking an intern interested in global education and/or environmental issues for the 2013 Spring semester. The intern will assist in various facets of One To World's Global Classroom program, in which trained international college and graduate students ("Global Guides") design and lead cross-cultural workshops in K-12 schools and after-school programs throughout New York City. Global Classroom's curriculum-based workshops are creative, engaging and globally-focused. Workshop topics range from an introduction to a speaker's country and culture, to special topics relating to stereotypes, global environmental issues, or the speaker's academic discipline. For youth, Global Classroom workshops expand their knowledge of global issues, as well as reduce the potential for misunderstanding and conflict based on racial, ethnic, and cultural differences. School credit available.

Qualifications:

  • Teaching experience (in school or after school)
  • Interest or experience in global education for K-12 schools
  • Responsible self-starter; dependable, independent worker
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Social Media)
  • Good communication and writing skills
  • Interest or experience in training and adult education
  • Knowledge of New York City, including outer boroughs, is a plus

Responsibilities:

To assist One To World Staff in the following functions:

  • Co-facilitate Global Classroom programs at K-12 schools and afterschool programs including leading workshops, program development, and classroom management
  • Assist in supporting speakers from a range of cultures with differing English levels as they develop and implement their workshops
  • Program documentation and evaluation
  • Co-lead occasional trainings and activities; some weekends
  • Recruitment, training, and correspondence with international speakers ("Global Guides")

Hours: 12 -15 hours per week (flexible) February through June 2013 (approximately). On-site internship supervisor provided.
