Description

Lakeview Pantry has been providing food to those in need since 1970. Today, the Pantry not only distributes groceries, it also provides the resources to address the circumstances that often lead to food insecurity, such as unemployment, housing instability and health issues.

The Pantry launched its Education and Advocacy program in January 2012 to promote effective public and private community and policy initiatives to provide long-term opportunities to people struggling with hunger and poverty. To know more visit our website.

We are seeking interns for the Education and Advocacy program. Ideal candidates should have positive "can do" attitude, initiative, flexibility, excellent writing skills, and attention to detail. Successful candidates should have a genuine interest in poverty alleviation and an appreciation of the policy making process that addresses poverty reduction.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting public policy research on short term projects related to research themes stated later.
  • Writing for the Pantry's website and for the Education and Advocacy quarterly Newsletter.
  • Assisting the program director in drawing political maps and gathering information of the top policy priorities (with special emphasis on social policies including anti-poverty policies as well as development plans) of the elected officials in Chicago and Illinois.
  • Attending some of the community coalition meetings with program director.
  • Working on Research themes like food insecurity, low-income housing, unemployment and income support.

Qualifications

  • A deep interest in poverty alleviation policies
  • Good oral, written, and communication/presentation skills
  • Pursuing BA/BS majoring in Social Sciences like Sociology, Political Science, Anthropology, Economics.
  • Preferred pursuing Masters in Social Sciences

Working Conditions for the position

  • At least a six week commitment either full time or part time depending on the project
  • Work from home and occasional meetings on site
  • Having access to personal laptop
  • Willing to travel within the city to meet policy experts, researchers and community organizers
  • This is an unpaid internship
