Description

Yspaniola is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization working to empower marginalized communities of Dominicans and Haitians in the Dominican Republic's Cibao region. We have been working in Batey Libertad near Esperanza since 2005 and support a university scholarship program to make higher education attainable for outstanding students in bateys, in addition to coordinating service-learning trips for US college students. Last year, we launched a primary-level education program to address the learning gap faced by the youngest students of Batey Libertad. To learn more about our projects, including the University Scholarship Program, please visit us at www.yspaniola.org or contact info@yspaniola.org for information.

Yspaniola seeks an Education Intern to work with the Batey Libertad Literacy Program for a 3-4 month period beginning in August. We currently offer three daily classroom tutoring sessions and are working with the community and education experts to develop a robust literacy curriculum to meet the needs of children, young adults, and adults. The program looks to develop literacy skills, foster creativity and critical thinking, and build leadership and self-esteem among marginalized children in Batey Libertad by offering daily educational support in a positive and welcoming learning environment. In response to low literacy among older children in the community, the literacy program supports students between the ages of 6 and 15 who have a wide range of abilities and interests.

After receiving training, the Education Intern will be integrated into the local team and partner work with students at various levels on a daily basis. Intern responsibilities include working with students to improve their reading and writing, writing periodic progress reports of individual students, and participating in additional educational and community activities. Interns will also assist with basic organizational operations, such as writing and editing program updates, contributing to social media platforms, and various administrative functions.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in or recent graduate of a 4-year university
  • Experience working with children or in education
  • Proficient oral and written Spanish
  • Willingless to learn Haitian Creole
  • Interest in International Development and Education Policy preferred
  • Flexibility and a sense of humor
